The Pratt & Whitney JT8D (first introduced in 1964) is considered by some to be the Work Horse of the Aviation Industry.  A modification of the P&W J52 turbojet engine used to power the U.S. Navy A-6 Intruder attack aircraft, it was used to power the first Boeing 727’s.

Today it is used to power most of the Boeing 737 classic airplanes, the Boeing 727 Series of Aircraft and the DC-9 Series.  More than 14,000 JT8D engines have been produced, making it the most popular of all low-bypass turbofan engines ever produced.

The JT8D is very reliable and relatively inexpensive to maintain.
